Puccini, Giacomo

Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) was born in Lucca, Tuscany. His father died when he was only 5, and he grew up in poverty. He attended a school which provided both scholastic and

musical education. After serving as church organist for three years, Puccini enrolled in the Milan Conservatory where he was taught by the respected opera composer Amilcare Ponchielli. On graduation at the age of 26, his early compositions had impressed such influential individuals as Arrigo Boito, renowned composer and librettist, and Giulio Ricordi, leading music publisher, who paid particular attention to nurturing his career.
