Musica Viva is a non-profit charitable organisation founded in October 2008 by a group of dedicated supporters with deep expertise in performing arts policy, development, outreach, and education. Its mission is to promote performing arts of creative originality across diverse forms and genres, with a particular focus on the appreciation, study, education, and performance of music, opera, and vocal art.

Led by Prof. Lo Kingman, SBS, MBE, JP, Musica Viva champions performing formats that demonstrate aesthetic refinement, genuine artistic content, and insightful interpretations presented with honesty and economy, while creating platforms for creative exploration and professional development for both emerging and established artists. With an international outlook, it actively presents its productions abroad, staging productions in Stockholm, St. Petersburg, London, and in the Chinese Mainland. Through these cross-border collaborations and tours, Musica Viva showcases Hong Kong’s artistic excellence on the global stage while fostering cultural exchange and expanding the city’s international artistic presence.

Since its inception, Musica Viva has been generously supported by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council (HKADC) and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD).

Lo Kingman was born in Hong Kong and educated at the Diocesan Boys’ School and The University of Hong Kong. He won an Italian Government Scholarship for advanced studies at the University of Rome, where he also received training at the Opera Theatre of Rome and the Morlacchi Theatre of Perugia.

Since the 1960s, Lo Kingman has written, directed and designed over a hundred stage productions ranging from opera, drama, to music and dance theatre, with performances in Hong Kong, mainland China, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, Europe and America. During 2008-10, he directed ten major western opera productions for Musica Viva of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, the Beijing Music Festival, the Shanghai Opera House, the Zhou Xiaoyan Opera Centre of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and the Singapore Lyric Opera, all enthusiastically received with warm critical acclaim.

Over the years, Lo Kingman has made significant contributions to the Hong Kong community, not only in the performing arts but also in the fields of higher education and public service. He has been the recipient of numerous awards and honours from international academic and arts institutions as well as the HKSAR Government and several foreign nations. In 2008, he participated in the creation of Musica Viva, an organization dedicated to nurturing young artists, and served as its Director-General.

Leung Siu Kwan Cindy received her Master of Arts (Music) at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Bachelor of Music (Honours) degree (major in vocal and minor in piano) at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. She was awarded an Italian Consulate Scholarship to further study in Italy. She later received a project grant from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council (HKADC) for her research on the development of opera in Hong Kong which led to her publications which include The History of Opera in Hong Kong – A Review of Lo Kingman’s Productions. She also published the Aural Guide for ABRSM and Demo Series: ABRSM and Trinity College Examination Pieces for Voice.

Currently, Leung serves as the General Manager of Musica Viva, a registered music examiner, and a part-time lecturer at HKAPA. She has been involved in more than 120 productions in Hong Kong, and has collaborated with international singers including Andrea Bocelli, Kiri Te Kanawa and Sumi Jo. In recent years, Leung has served as an opera director and directed more than 10 productions on stages in Asia and Europe, including the Vietnam National Opera and Ballet, the Saigon Orchestra, and the Lyric Opera of the Philippines . Her productions are also boardcast on RTHK TV 31.

Leung recently directed and produced Musica Viva’s Orfeo ed Euridice for secondary schools students. She will reproduce the same project at Ulriksdal’s Palace Theatre – Confidencen, a Swedish Baroque heritage theatre, with accompaniment from the Swedish Baroque Chamber Orchestra Rebaroque Stockholm. This project will mark an important milestone in establishing the very first opera collaboration and cultural exchange relationship between the two cities.
